Call me a curmudgeon but I do not like Presidents’ Day. When I was much younger, we celebrated the birthdays of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, learning about their lives and how they contributed to our history. Presidents’ Day has come to be too inclusive for my taste. Are we supposed to celebrate all presidents, even the incompetent and dishonest ones? Because this year is a presidential election year, I have been thinking a great deal about the important qualities and qualifications that make a person suited for the office. It is an honor to serve in a democracy, and I want a leader who respects the position and its responsibilities. At least I can rely on Etsy for all sorts of tributes to the Highest Office.

The holiday is still officially Washington’s birthday. Even though he never did chop down that cherry tree, I plan to honor him by eating cherry pie.

Lincoln is my favorite president. He not only saved the Union and freed the slaves, his eloquence rings true today.

Now that I have lived long enough to see an African-American president, I am looking forward to the year we elect a woman.

Tell me, do you have a favorite president?

The only reason I hate President's Day is because I do not have the day off! LOL! Nonetheless, I think that celebrating every president is a celebration of democracy. *We* elect *them*. It's sort of like an adoption, and we choose the one we want. The corrupt and dishonest ones are just another fold in American history. We are not perfect, we are a growing changing country. I've only been eligible to vote for four presidents. Bill Clinton was my first pick. Barack Obama was my last pick. Every president I have voted for has one each of his elections. So yeah...throw George W. Bush in there as well. I loved each of them for different reasons. Happy President's Day!

Great picks but PLEASE people we live in a Republic. NOT a democracy. Seriously it's an important difference.
Victoria Benenati from DeweysNook says:
My little posies: We don't live in A republic ;). A republic, by definition, is a government ruled by one or few people or, communism, neither do we live in a democracy, a democracy in it's pure form is anarchy, or a government ruled only by the people. We live in an indirect-republic, or, a democratic republic ;). Fascinating, however, we take two of the GREATEST opposite evils (Communism, or totalitarianism and anarchy) and smash them together to get the greatest system man can create. My favorite president is easily John Adams. My least favorite is Woodrow Wilson and Obama. I would love to have a woman president, but, I would never, EVER vote for a president strinctly on their gender or race. I want to vote for someone I agree with.

Jason and Andie from andiespecialtysweets says:
There is a very good reason that our Pledge of Allegiance refers to our country as a Republic and there is a very good reason that our Declaration of Independence and our constitution do not even mention the word "democracy". The Founders were extremely knowledgeable about the issue of democracy and feared a democracy as much as a monarchy. They understood that the only entity that can take away the people's freedom is their own government, either by being too weak to protect them from external threats or by becoming too powerful and taking over every aspect of life. They knew very well the meaning of the word "democracy", and the history of democracies; and they were deliberately doing everything in their power to prevent having a democracy. In a Republic, the sovereignty resides with the people themselves. In a Republic, one may act on his own or through his representatives when he chooses to solve a problem. The people have no obligation to the government; instead, the government is a servant of the people, and obliged to its owner, We the People. Many politicians and Americans have lost sight of that fact. A Constitutional Republic has some similarities to democracy in that it uses democratic processes to elect representatives and pass new laws, etc. The critical difference lies in the fact that a Constitutional Republic has a Constitution that limits the powers of the government. It also spells out how the government is structured, creating checks on its power and balancing power between the different branches. The goal of a Constitutional Republic was to avoid the dangerous extreme of either tyranny or mobocracy but what exists in America today is a far cry from the Constitutional Republic our forefathers brought forth. Article IV Section 4 of the Constitution states: "The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican form of Government, and shall protect each of them against Invasion . . ." Fave Presidents: 1) George Washington, because he didn't want to be president, but did a darn good job. 2) Thomas Jefferson, believed in sound money, and wanted government to mind their own business. 3) John Adams -great integrity. Even as a lawyer he defended the British Red Coats, even though they had committed horrible crimes, just because he wanted them to have a fair hearing.

Great finds! I'd have to say that I admire Lincoln as well. Since he's one of my favorite presidents, I had to read the book Abe Lincoln Vampire Hunter. Excellent book - and they are making a movie about it! It takes historical events and puts a great creative spin on them. Here's the trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=34x6m-ahGIo Thanks for the good read!

a very thought provoking article, and love the finds. thanks jason and andie for your words, they ring very true. we the people. that phrase has never meant more. it's not about who the president is, it's who the people are and how we all work together to form a nation that supports each other, and has great influence worldwide. here's hoping we can put someone in office that understands that
