Marilyn Brogan's Profile

About

My jewelry: My metal work follows the same process as my drawings: working with multiples of the same form, arranging and rearranging to create new patterns. In both arenas my work is executed with precision and an eye for detail. Evidence of the hand is never present in the form of file marks or sloppy solder seams! I enjoy movement in jewelry, especially in earrings and strive to keep even the largest earrings light as a feather.

My drawings: I enjoy repetition and order especially when the inaccuracy of the human hand is evident. I used to work with multiples of the same found object (rubber bands, pine needles) but now I'm working with multiples of the same form: circles, dots and lines.

Me: My name is Marilyn Brogan and I earned a BFA in sculpture from Virginia Commonwealth University. A few years later I was selected for the two year Core Program / fellowship at Penland School of Crafts in the beautiful mountains of North Carolina. I was studying surface design and weaving at Penland until I took a metals class and fell in love. I currently reside in sunny San Diego and in addition to running my jewelry business, I teach art part time at an amazing charter school - High Tech High Media Arts.

Current Influences: Cacti, succulents, and exotic fruits found in my neighborhood, newly learned metals techniques, color theory and weather phenomena.
