Norway: An extreme Arctic adventure |
Ever think of snowmobiling on glaciers past frozen fjords, dog-sledding to an ice cave and spending the night in an old Dutch schooner that's stuck in the ice? A travel company called Red Savannah offers a tailor-made trip to Norway's northernmost Arctic area that takes things to extremes -- in a good way.
The itinerary for the trip to the Svalbard Archipelago can be as remote as you'd like. The idea is to see walrus and reindeer, fjords and mountains, and explore a pristine part of Norway about 600 miles from the North Pole. The company's sample itinerary includes arriving in Oslo, flying to Lonyearbyen and then snowmobiling (you'll be trained and outfitted with gear) to places like Barentsburg, an old Russian coal mining town now abandoned, and Isfjord. And you can opt to mush to an ice cave with a team of huskies too. Company founder George Morgan-Grenville wrote this firsthand account of his Arctic experience.
When: Dates and activities are arranged for each trip.
Price: $6,262...

Question: I am traveling to Germany and will stay five weeks. I have an iPhone 4 with service through AT&T. I would like to use my phone for calls, primarily within Germany, and sending and receiving text messages. Should I look for service in Germany? Should I buy a throwaway phone while there for calls and use my iPhone solely for sending and receiving text messages? Should I get international service? What is the least expensive program?

John DiScala has. DiScala, better known as Johnny Jet of the website of the same name, didn't have that monster phone bill — he has an international calling plan that gives him a good rate — but his wife, Natalie, did. She carried her iPhone without an international plan and, well, oh my.
These lessons are difficult and costly. Staying connected can be expensive, but not $1,400, experts...
